Overall it’s a good scotch. Even though it’s a 100 proof, the alcohol is well integrated. The feeling of Mortlach isn’t very obvious here, not as meaty as expected which is quite disappointing, though got the same orangy taste and sherry note as OB Mortlach.

The sherry influence is generous without becoming overwhelming, while the palate remains firmly built around high-quality oak rather than excessive cask sweetness. That balance is very much in line with the character I find in the OB Mortlach 16Y. More importantly, despite its active sherry maturation, it never loses Mortlach's distinctive distillery character, with the meaty finish coming through beautifully. Complex, layered, and remarkably mature for its age, this is an excellent young cask-strength Mortlach.

The nose is expressive without becoming overly assertive, striking a nice balance between elegance and intensity. Rich dark berries lead the way, followed by classic sherried notes of dried fruits, candied fruits, and baking spices. A delicate touch of mint adds a refreshing herbal lift in the background. This unexpected emphasis on wood adds impressive depth and structure, resulting in a rich, weighty profile with excellent layering.

The finish opens with lingering preserved fruits before settling into a remarkably balanced combination of seasoned oak, maritime salinity, and a restrained, pleasantly bitter tannic edge. The proportions feel roughly dominated by oak and sea salt, with just enough bitterness to add definition rather than detract. The persistent saline character continuously evolves, keeping the finish engaging without becoming cloying. There is virtually no alcohol heat left at this stage. This is also where Mortlach's trademark meaty character finally emerges. The lingering aftertaste is strikingly reminiscent of a juicy grilled steak seasoned simply with salt and pepper, allowing the natural savoury flavours of the meat to shine through.

Mortlach is one of the most hyped distilleries in Speyside, with a reputation for 'meaty' whiskies, which, as a vegetarian, I'm not particularly fond of. And somehow, the premiumization that Diageo is so desperately trying isn't really working. Or to put it more simply – I haven't quite found my way into Mortlach yet. Nevertheless, I'm naturally interested and curious to see if there's an affordable Mortlach from the 100 Proof Edition available. Here, the sherry influence is clearly evident, as the color alone demonstrates. glen-efze.de

A very typical 100 Proof SV... not that they're inherently bad. But if you've tried one, you've tried most of them. On the nose, typical Oloroso nutty notes dominate, along with, to my ears, rather light fruit notes with a hint of tobacco. On the palate, as expected, young and wild, but a few drops of water tame it somewhat.

Mortlach is always a good choice. This one also offers excellent value for money. Nicely meaty, oily, and with the typical Mortlach gooseberry notes, plus a delicate sherry influence – not too much, as the color might suggest. A delight on its own.
