Some reviewers argue that age statements are becoming less important, but I've to disagree. That said, there are a few exceptions. The nose of Glen Scotia Victoriana is very old school, combining porridge, spiced oranges and tobacco with sea spray, sweet licorice and peppermint. Loads of spices and citrus fruits kick off the punchy arrival before aniseed, wood smoke and ginger unfold. There is definitely some older stock in here. Cinnamon, brown sugar and hints of salt sparkle in the savory finish. Credit where credit is due, this malt has a lot going for it! RATING: 4.0/5.0 stars ≙ 87 pts → FIRST-CLASS

Aroma: A little watery, herbal, vanilla, unripe fruit, cornflower, potatoes Taste: Sweet, strong, wet wood and bark, orange peel, nuts. Aftertaste: Medium, strong, slightly bitter, freshly cut green wood, orange. Summary: This one is awesome. I have two bottles, so we have plenty of time to make friends. It already looks like we're going to be friends. But I'm getting used to the bitter herbal notes a bit.
The aroma is very pleasant; that's the best part.

This will probably enter my top 5. The price / value is just extremely high and the spirit itself is so full, flavorful, and very characteristic. [I bought my bottle for around 56 EUR in Hungary. AND NO IT WAS NOT IN PROMOTION! Since then they increased it's price but I can still buy it for 65 EUR any day of the week!]

Sweet, oak, caramel and, chocolate, slight spice and ripe apples. Slightly sweet, creamy and nutty, some good sherry barrel flavours, lightly smoky. Medium finish, followed by spice and pepper flavours. Very good, very standard Glen Scotia, but slightly lacking in flavour.

I got this sample in a three-pack with version WB256105 and WB62938. The scent is surprisingly creamy, buttery, very fragrant, malty, vanilla, slightly spicy, slightly spicy with leather in the background. A very slight hint of smoke. The taste is very malty, woody, spicy, tannic with pronounced fruitiness and a slight smoke and leather. Bitter cocoa in the background.

On the nose, very clear notes of wood, but also salty and maritime. Some toasted oak notes with a touch of spice. Vanilla from new wood. Creme brulle, but made with a pinch of salt. Fruity notes of fresh apple, ripe apple, and pear, a touch of Calvados. Dried fruit, dried white grapes (sultanas). A slightly nutty character, more in the style of a dry Madeira. Lovely mouthfeel, again with the wood, oily, salty, sour, and sweet. With a pleasant hint of pepper. Medium-length finish. Delicious whisky.

Rotten, moldy wood, parallel to notes of ex-bourbon, chocolate, pastries. But the taste was somewhat lacking, this inclination towards bourbon is somewhat not what was wanted. But the aroma draws out the malt a lot.

It's been a while since I last tasted the Victoriana. The design has changed since then. What has remained the same: the whisky is uncolored, non-chill filtered, and bottled at cask strength. But regardless of the year, cask strength is always 54.2% ABV. One could philosophize about that. Perhaps they blend batches that will last for several years, even if the design changes in between? Or perhaps it's diluted before being filled into the casks for finishing, because 54.2% ABV isn't much for a NAS cask strength whisky. No matter. It's a NAS whisky, and the importer Hawe's website states that the whisky initially matures in first-fill ex-bourbon casks, followed by a 30% finish in first-fill PX sherry butts and a 70% finish in heavy char barrels. This results in a rich golden color. Prices in winter 2025 will range from just under €60 to €78. glen-efze.de

I didn't really notice it at first, but it's there, providing that slight grit we like to call Campbeltown funk. And once it becomes noticeable, the smoke is there to stay. The smoke then masks a subtle mineral note, which might be a sign of youth. |

The tart fruits are present—perhaps pineapple—but there's definitely orange, and maybe even kumquats. After the first sip, the alcohol becomes more restrained, even without water. The smoke remains distinct, perhaps with a slight hint of charred wood in the background, which would suit the deep char character. Overall, though, the smoke is more smoky than funk, and the whisky doesn't appear to be very old. |
| Финиш | — | The whisky develops a dry finish with some bitter aromas and smokiness that lingers on the palate. I remember the Victoriana as being less smoky and with a different funkiness. But memories can be deceiving. The whisky isn't old, but it also doesn't have any jarringly youthful aromas. Certainly, the smokiness with a bitter component hints at its lack of age. It's a lovely Glen Scotia; the combination of smoke, burnt caramel with vanilla, and slightly bitter oranges is quite delicious. Nevertheless, my memory is better than today's tasting. Sometime I'll open an old bottle I still have. Today it gets one point less than three years ago, but it remains a good whisky. The Victoriana should definitely not cost more than €60. |
