Laphroaig Quarter Cask —

If the 10 is the pure expression of that salty, seaweed type of wet smoke, then this is a more complex and rich, dryer charcoal type of smoke that fills your entire mouth. Overall a superb effort from Laphroaig, considering the price.
A beautiful, no frills Laphroaig.

Laphroaig Quarter Cask, 48%. Aug 2018 - Dram sample. Smooth smoke, paraffin, waxy smooth smoke and oak, quite mellow like a watered down Port Charlotte with a touch of TCP. Nice enough. (3.3/79) Mar 2019 - At Laphroaig distillery. Not the rounded peatiness of 10, more woody. (3.4/81) May 2019 - Bottle at home (procured cheaply from Amazon for £24) - there's a medicinal iodine swimming pool note in the finish. This is growing on me - it's a very nice official Laphroaig bottling. Aroma soft smoked fish, lightly medicinal, toffee notes. Taste soft smoke and vanilla biscuit. Seemed to improve as I drank my way through the bottle. (3.6/86) July 2019 - Dram at a bar. Aroma liquorice wood and sticky rice. Some faint medicinal and smoke notes. Taste oily rubbery burnt rubber wood and smoke. I do feel that this whisky improves with air. (3.65/87)

| Нос | 87 | Sweet peat. Hospital. Bandages. Maybe a dentist, but in a better, sweeter way. Salt. Sea breeze. Salty caramel. Maybe even some peanut butter. For this strength and age, the alcohol is well covered. Smoke. The aromas in the nose change. It is comprehensive. |
| Вкус | 86 | Medicine definitely stands out at the beginning. Medical peat. Salt. Lots of spices. Pepper, ginger. Spicy. Then saltiness and sweetness again. Salty caramel. |
| Финиш | 87 | Smoke. Sweetness and salt. Salty caramel. Smoke and medication again. There are also spices. Chili, ginger. The salty, sweet and medicinal aromas remain for a long time. Long finish. |
Canola oil, moss, peat, turf, medicinal smoke, burnt wood. Slightly off balance and alcohol forward
Bonfire smoke, very slightly medicinal, cheese, hay, barbecued tropical fruits, buttered biscuits, old parchment, damp earth, salt, pepper. Meaty and musty. Lovely texture. A robust, tasty dram which has the added benefit of being superb value for money.

D-E-licious. For the price, this is hard to beat. It's surprisingly complex, very intense and comforting at the same time. Drinking this transports me to a camp-fire in a rain wet forest. Awesome that a whisky can do that. And that Fernet Branca-like herbal bitter-sweetness in the finish is really something.
N: I know i was disappointed with this last time i tried this NAS [around 2014]. 2016 heralds time for me to try this again, but a bottle from the same batch. Im getting smoked potatoes [uncooked], smoked paprika, BBQ celery-scrub. Five months later the buttery, almost eggy sponge malty arrival is something to behold and m loving this farmy, oily - well i could go on but a consolidated, moorish, Islay-umami should cover it nicely. Actually its equally salty and coastal as it is inland/highland? - and those oily butters make this a nigh on flawless start. T: A swirling mixture of sweet-to-medicinal-to-candy sweet woody-peaty-potato notes. Acacia honey into the finish. Five months later and the oily, sweet butter is the enduring quality - fabulous F: The finish is longer than the palate with smoked oily-malt, some smoke, some ash - actually heaps of ashtray now. Five months on and the [smoky/ashtray/bonfire] milk chocolate on the finish is to die for - beats actual chocolate hands down. C: In the main, my earlier disappointment with this Quarter cask, and still my main gripe is it’s strength, it’s too thin at 40%. That aside, this is a thoroughly engaging malt with sweet profile waves that swirl underneath the peat smoke. Five months after opening this second bottle and its cooking, Its a B score [minimum] without question. B+ wouldn’t be outrageous either. So what’s changed from the first time i tried this? Me, obviously. Now i get the buzz around the Quarter cask! Buzzy indeed, but as is often the case, it’s batch dependant. Scores a B[+]

After drinking 50ml, I had some Glenmorangie 14-Year-Old Port Oak. Interestingly, Glenmorangie Port Oak has a lower alcohol content, but it's more pungent than Laphroaig QC when smelling it; I coughed from it more than once. In comparison to Laphroaig QC, the sweetness and acidity of the Glenmorangie 14-Year-Old Port Oak were more pronounced on the palate. Also, Laphroaig QC deteriorates significantly towards the end, becoming strong and bitter, so I recommend finishing it quickly. Notes date: 20210407 Reference price (based on rating): CNY 260

| Нос | 85 | Many people say it smells like the salty sea. That's a vivid description, but for me, a more accurate description is that it has a unique foot odor—not that it actually smells like foot odor, but because foot odor has a common characteristic—theoretically, foul odors are unpleasant, but while foot odor isn't exactly pleasant, some foot odors are not only not offensive, but are actually incredibly addictive! Laphroaig QC's fragrance isn't sweet, not "fragrant," but it's incredibly addictive! |
| Вкус | 82 | It does taste like peaty and wood, and sometimes there's a faint salty-sweet flavor on the tongue when it first enters the mouth. |

Laphroaig Quarter Casks Category: Single Malt Manufacturer and bottler: Laphroaig Distillery (Beam Suntory) Region: Islay Fortress: 48% Volume: 700 ml Bottling date: 01/27/2020 Barrel type: ex-bourbon + quarter casks finish Age: no indication Filtering: no Dye: present Nose. Immediately intensely reveals a truly impressive array of scents. Here, as well as smoke, burnt wood, smoked pork, motifs of the salty sea coast, known from other Ayl scotch tapes, so is the typical “Lafroig” medical theme (iodine, bandages, pills, Vishnevsky ointment). Also impressive are the nuances of "animal" origin (leather, wool), rubber (rubber), tar, the aroma of shoe cream, limestone. By adding a little water, we will help to reveal the sweet aromas of smoked fruits (plums, cherries, gooseberries, white currants), vanilla and hot chocolate, lingonberry acid and lemon peel. Spices (ginger and pepper), anise and steeply brewed coffee complete the overall picture. Taste. Surprisingly rich and harmonious, not at all scratchy for its very high degree. Pleases us with a very powerful smoky-burnt theme, richness of spices, coffee bitterness, iodine, but at the same time there are creamy vanilla sweetness, milk chocolate, smoked fruits, sour gooseberries and lemon zest. Aftertaste. Continuous. Iodine, burntness, spices, berry compote. Conclusion. An excellent, memorable whisky with a rich, rich flavor palette, which, despite its probable youth, surpasses many Islay scotches, first of all, Laphroaig 10 YO, which looks like a “poor relative” against its background, is several times weaker on all fronts and it is not clear why it is needed at all. Thanks to this release, I wanted to continue my acquaintance with the products of the distillery, it really pleased me, and therefore rating: 87 out of 100.

The best entry level from Laphroaig. Being a NAS it is not such a big disadvantage for a peated malt. 48% for this one makes the difference comparing to the 10 YO. Even if it is presumably younger than the 10 YO the taste is more complex
1/4 barrel is a strong expression of smoke. Usually when you want to drink peated whisky, you want to be bombarded well, This is done perfectly at 48% ABV at 1/4 barrel. The best thing is that the prices are all very good. I am grateful to Suntory and praise Suntory. The total taste is 86 points, the price +1 point, a total of 87 points.

Laphroaig is perhaps the Scottish whisky distillery with the most extreme house character, and the Quarter Cask is purposefully bred to hit you with full force, with the smaller casks adding the necessary sweetness. The logical next step for any beginner who has been intrigued by the standard 10. The depth is a bit lacking, but it's still more than enough fun.

Distinct ring of “disinfectant” (especially before airing). Rounded smoky smell and body; coherent flavour combination all revolving around the smokiness, with bitterness and sweetness naturally integrated. Salt appears in the front palate. A neutral, direct, granular peat profile; strong smoke followed by an unfruity sweetness. Refreshing and very non-attention-taxing, yet it rewards attention. Ultimately, the palate is exactly what one expects from drinking it.
Though I have the impression that some older batches were even better, the QC remains one of my favourite whiskies below 35 euros. 85/86.

My first smoky Whisky! I like smoky!
нос 85 · вкус 83 · финиш 84
It's the Laphroaig nose, you'd recognize it among a thousand. Bitumen, nails, and fuel oil. But this one is a bit more abrupt, smokier, less iodized, and more syrupy. You can feel the influence of the bourbon, which blends very well with the ash and betadine, softening it slightly. The little that's changed on the nose is changed on the taste. A slight sweet influence, more vanilla than lemon, but overall we remain in a familiar universe, caramel, chocolate, and cola, married with peat and vegetal notes. A somewhat sparkling finish, full of coffee and medium length. Earth and plants to finish. We appreciate the power of the alcohol, and that of the peat, nevertheless I prefer the 10 year old, more refined and more typical. https://ilikesky2020.blogspot.com/2020/05/laphroaig-quarter-cask.html

Personally find it a slightly insipid version of the Laphroaig 10. There isn't the same brashness or complexity you get with the 10, and the mouthfeel is somewhat diminished too. Nevertheless, a good peaty treat.

Strongly smoky. Unfortunately oxidizes extremely quickly, so you have to hold on: D
Nicely balanced between the peat/brine and the wood
Quarter casks are a neat way to accelerate the aging process by increasing the wood influence in a given space of time (more surface area) whilst avoiding the often unenjoyable woodiness of virgin oak. The key Laphroaig flavours are all there – peach, smoke and iodine – so if that is your thing then there isn't much to complain about. That being said, most other Islay distilleries offer more compelling options for only a little more money.
The scent contains an old rotting bathhouse with hanging brooms, phenolic motifs and chemical smokiness. The taste is very oaky, with a lot of hot spices and phenols. The finish is tart, oaky, bitter with spices and phenols. It would be strange to expect from a small barrel that there will be no overburdening, otherwise the distillery is guessed without problems, a good release, even. RATING: 85pts - | 83 - 86 (B) → Good | - Not a “must”, but a nice-to-have.
Nose: Heavy smoke, tart woody, sweet and the Laphroaig medicinal note Mouth: not quite as intensely smoky and medicinal as the 10, but more wood and sweeter. I would say more accessible. But what comes next? A very bitter note that extremely spoils the whole fun. Cannot compete with the Laphroaig 10 in my opinion due to the horrific exit.

Complex, well rounded, better than 10y. Typical Laphroaig.
The peaty fruity nose is initially a bit shy, with a touch of coconut banana followed by smoky sweetness. The deep complex tones with a vanilla, smoked herbs, honey glazed smoked food, sweet smoke, hickory and coconut banana finish. A nice rendition however even at a higher ABV than the standard 10 yo it seems to lack a bit of peaty oomph. A would say a good beginner Laphroaig if you’re just getting into peat.

Nice one, more balanced than the 10, but also less extreme. Different profile in fact. Tasted at Whisky Live Paris 2015.
Young classic Laphroaig with great value for money, well balanced

it lost a bit over the years. but still wonderful sweet, peat, smoke, some bacon, salty, some seaweed, price is still more than fair - still a nearly perfect dram

A great whisky: a perfect finish drink to end the evenings! We have everything nature can offer: campfire, smoked haring, wet autumn forest, hints of sweet caramel and vanilla, rubber. Great with (and without) a drop of water!

| Нос | 79 | A peated, smoked, caramel-like and buttery nose with soft hickory and rum influences. |
| Вкус | 82 | Stony, full body, complex and balanced with heated tones and rubber. Vanilla-flower finish. |
| Финиш | 80 | Very full finish. Love it. Broad palet of: smoked haring, seaweed, animal fat, wet autumn forest... |
Surprisingly rich flavours, adding some oaky wood notes to the usual Laphroaig smoky taste. Despite the higher alcohol degree, the result is more balanced than the usual 10yo, with softer and not overwhelming smoky taste and increased wood and fruity notes. Just pity for the artificial caramel colours, but the price/quality ratio is going to make it my preferred basic level choice from this Islay distillery.
Typical Laphi in the nose: somewhat dusty, medicinal, iodine, maritime and of course smoky. Later also various spices. Nice and full and woody-fruity in the mouth, the alcohol content should not be lower. The finish is characterized by the chocolaty wood, coffee, the smokiness and the maritime fruitiness, which alternate constantly. Length: 7/10 Fantastic PLV, I don't know of any other malt that offers so much for so little money. Grade: 2+
What a badass whisky, just straight-up full of smoky domination. The smokiness is strong as the smell of burnt metal in an oily welding hall. It stands out from afar and obscures all the more subtle aromas. Chocolate marmalade, cinnamon, blue cheese, and some sort of leather. The mouthfeel is peppery and slightly salty/seaweedy like smoked salmon, which eventually dissipates as the oak and diesel aftertaste fades. The empty glass reveals another surprise: a hint of vanilla. Pretty amazing as it is, and a heavy hitter for sure. 84 points.
recently tasted again with friends. I have to correct my first rating because I gave it 83 points - now I'm increasing it to 87 ;) Smell: mango, marcuja and other tropical fruits Flavor: Mango again, quite intense. On the palate the smoke is not obtrusive or even disturbing, on the contrary, the smoke makes the whisky nice and round. Finish: medium length, here the smoke predominates but not a campfire or cold coals, more like a smoke trail blown over by the wind.

S 7 A sweeter, fatter Laphroaig. Way gentler than the ordinary 10 but more complex and still retains that Laphroaig character. Might be a better entry point for non-Laphroaig drinkers. N 25 Very buttery. Vanilla. Meaty. Moderate peat but hidden in the background. Mildly malty. P 25 Very Sweet & Laphroaig. Heavily peated and here comes the bonfire, a touch medicinal at the back. Barley sugar mixed with heather honey. Consistent pokes from the chilli. F 25 Long finish. Charred meat. Still sweet, like oak cookies.
First time in quite some years I've tasted this again. Greasy smoke, phenolic, iodine, hansaplast, smoked and salted meat, a vanilla sweetness in the background. Development and finish are spicy and peppery with charcoal and ashes, but it never shifts out of balance with the sweeter notes. Still by far the better option when compared to the standard 10 y/o.

L3 105 SB1, Korean official import version. "Laphroaig Quartacask is the god of pit entries" There are many good entry-level lineups from other famous distilleries, but Laphroaig Quarter Cask, which can be purchased for around 70,000 won through various discount methods such as Onnuri in Korea, is considered one of the best choices for cost-effective peat. It shows a more complete appearance than Laphroaig 10, and even at a low price, the generous alcohol content of 48.0% and the impact are very satisfactory performance for the price. The influence of bourbon cask is felt a lot, and it finds an exquisite balance by strongly blending with the fairly strong peat. Considering the distribution price of Laphroaig 10cs in Korea, the satisfaction for the price is much higher.

Its smoke becomes truly addictive. It dominates the nose, accompanied by citrus and sweet notes, and on the palate it becomes more robust and present.

Better than 10 years
A well-balanced and very coherent whisky with a strong identity. Its main strength is its distinctive medicinal, iodine-heavy peat character, supported by clean wood, vanilla and some banana fruitiness. It does not fail in any particular area, although I do not find it especially complex or deep. Very characterful and enjoyable, with a long finish, but not quite in the 87–88 point range for me.

| Нос | 85 | Alcohol is noticeable but pleasant and never aggressive. Strong medicinal character from the start, especially iodine, reminiscent of dark antiseptic used for treating wounds. Cut grass that has been left to dry for a while, together with a distinctly medicinal, iodine-driven peat. With some air the peat becomes more pronounced and a clean, relatively dry wood note appears underneath. After further time in the glass, vanilla becomes noticeable, together with a clear ripe banana note. Coconut is much less obvious to me. |
| Вкус | 84 | More alcoholic presence than a standard 40% whisky, but still well controlled. Slightly oily texture. Ground black pepper comes first, followed by a fresh herbal character. The medicinal, iodine-led peat from the nose carries clearly into the palate and remains very recognizable. Vanilla appears more clearly with time, together with a light fruity banana note. Towards the end there is also a light yeasty/fermentative character and clean wood. Very coherent with the nose. |
| Финиш | 84 | Long, around 8/10 for me. The medicinal peat and iodine remain clearly present, together with the herbal side, pepper and a light fermentative note. The retronasal return is particularly good: warm alcohol vapours, pleasant peppery heat and a very clear return of the iodine and peat. |

A wonderful malt whisky, and probably the best Bang for your Buck from the Southern Shore of Islay. I don't like the fact that they did add artificial colour, but apart from that, I adore this whisky, and it's definitely ten times better than the humble 10yo.

Nice sweet smokey dram.
Batches vary, but generally over the years you get a good, powered up (48% avb) version of LP that many regard superior to the 10 for only a few bucks more. In a way the QC is the "poor man's cask strength" at a discount price. And that's meant as a compliment. :-)
Matured in ex-bourbon casks for at least 5 years. Finished in quarter casks. Non-chill filtered. Coloured. Thick fast slowly forming straight primary legs. Midsize slow secondary legs. Droplets.

I first tasted this about 8 years ago. The price of it is already easily 30-40% higher, but that's with just about everything these days. Glad I was able to pick up another bottle of this. Laphroaig sells itself as "the most richly flavored" and with this Quarter cask they add some extra power. The medicinal strong taste, I like it. Certainly not every day, but it can sometimes taste damn good.

My first Laphroaig years ago, so always special to me. Being honest though, it's a bit too astringent and oaky, verging on cardboard notes. But the sweet bonfire peat carries it and gives it a nice sense of depth, and the mossy, seaweedy, and medicinal notes that define Laphroaig still come through nicely. A more aggressive alternative to the standard 10 year old, especially for those in EU where that one is bottled at 40%.

First and second bottles batch: 2020 and 2021? For me, one of the most archetypal peated Scotches of all time. It made me fall in love with Laphroaig. I love it. Impossible to not feel nostalgic about it when I go back to it. Sadly, the new releases are way less peaty and way more sweet. I will miss this old bottling. I finished two bottles of this wonderful whisky already, and started trying other offerings from the distillery, like Laphroaig 10 CS and regular 10, and Laphroaig Triple Wood (sadly discontinued). Lately, I also acquired a bottle of Laphroaig PX, Laphroaig 10 Sherry Casks and Laphroaig An Cuan Mòr. I love them all, especially the 10 CS. All of them are way better than this bottle, not gonna lie. Sooner or later I will try Laphroaig Lore, Laphroaig 1815 and Laphroaig Brodir. This is, without a doubt, one of my favorite distilleries of all time. One day I will visit it. My third bottle (L2 287 SB1 2353 10:03) was a disappointment. Noticeably less peaty. No longer one of my favorites.
Color: Gold The first Quarter Cask that was ever released to the market (2004) was really outstanding in my opinion (Serge Valentin rated it 90 points). The current version is much worse (Serge Valentin rated it 79 Points) although I find it still enjoyable and easy drinking. Good value for money.

Alcohol great integrated, no burning, pleasant, delicate and quite complex. You can deal with it for a long time and play with some water, great cinema for a small price. Great!

Nose lets you know just what's coming. Peaty, sea spray, plenty of organic compounds you'd measure in ppm. Unmistakably Islay. On the palate there's a lot going on for a NAS, maybe its the smaller cask. Everything from the nose is on show, plus a pepperiness that comes through, then the smoky finish. Less medicinal than my preconception, though hints of those flavours. A lot of bang for your buck here.
Nice standard bottling with a great price-performance ratio, which I prefer to the 10-year-old (with 40%) due to the higher drinking strength. With the Quarter Cask, however, you should definitely empty the bottle within three quarters of a year, otherwise it will lose the beautiful banana aroma behind the smoke and become increasingly bitter, tarry and later almost inedible.

A very good whisky. Sweet and smoky, but simple and balanced. I like this better than the 10-year old version, though my rating for that was higher at the time (many years ago). I would certainly choose this over the standard 10-year old, though neither can compete with the much preferable cask strength release.
