A classic example of modern sherry.
Olé! Exactly two years ago, in September 2018, Glenrothes announced that they were abandoning the so-called Vintages. In it’s stead they put out the Soleo Collection with age statement. They now have a 10, 12, 18, 25 and even 40 Year Old. The only exception is this Whisky Maker’s Cut, that is bottled at a slightly higher ABV and matured on sherry casks from Andalusia. The nose is very clean and creamy with hints of hazelnut, caramel and blood oranges. Very soft notes of nutmeg and some fresh tea leaves. The wood slowly becomes louder. Far from bad, but nothing spectacular either. Oh! I spoke too soon! On the palate, this is a nice flavor bomb. Honeysweet on oloroso and vanilla with a good spiciness. Sweet malt and lots of fruit like raisins, plums and oranges caress the tongue. It’s not the most complex Glenrothes, but it is certainly a very pleasant and quaffable sherry matured malt with some punch. In the long, spicy and warm finish it suddently turns quite creamy, making me daydream of a summer holdiday. Soleo, olé! Good and very fairly priced (around 50 EUR). Bang for your buck. Thanks, Timon.

Too spicy and watery
A very nice sherry NAS whisky bottled at a higher ABV. Not an atom of sulphur in sight (Jim Murray was once again right). Slightly sour, citrus notes, red berries combined with pleasant sweetness - milk chocolate alike. No bitternes. What a success! Very good casks must have been selected for this...

Yellow. Nose: Vanilla, fruit, cassis. Taste: As do, nice body. HWS No. 4.
Tasted again and didn't improve - same rating still
The Maker's Cut is a wonderfully sherry-matured single malt from Glenrothes. The increased alcohol content of nearly 49% ABV beautifully brings out its aromas. This is how one would have wished the standard Glenrothes 12, which was unfortunately bottled at only 40% ABV. Everything has been done right here. The finish is beautifully characterized by notes of chocolate, espresso, and honey. It is a significant improvement over the 12-year-old bottling.

| Нос | 85 | A beautifully fruity nose, typical of a sherry-matured whisky. Peach, plum, apricot, blood orange. Citrus notes. Nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla, honey, milk chocolate. Significantly more expressive than the Glenrothes 12. |
| Вкус | 86 | A powerful start. The nearly 49% ABV is noticeable. Pleasant ginger heat and a touch of wood spice. Then fruit. Plums, dates, figs, orange, lemon. Vanilla, honey, nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon, dark chocolate, espresso, hazelnuts. Very nicely spicy, fruity, and sweet. |
| Финиш | 85 | The initial taste is marked by a distinct ginger spiciness and a slight bitterness from the wood. This is followed by lovely spices and fruity sweetness. The finish leaves behind pleasant notes of chocolate, nuts, espresso, and honey. The finish is medium-long. |

The perfect whisky when it's cold outside and you're sitting in front of a fireplace. So far the best sherry bomb I've drunk (and there were already some). Absolutely top for the price.
My first Glenrothes did not disappoint! This was tasty and delicious, reminded me of a few Macallans I have tried, a floral aspect in the palate was unexpected, Px but not overly sweet with a nice oak/spice balance

a lot of sulfur notes, Glenrothes character is nothing left if I'm honest then I'm disappointed that this OA is like many sherry UAs; what shoud that? I read that Gordon Motion wanted to show what Glenrothes can do in a sherry keg; Why? There are already the UAs. The OAs should stand out from the UAs and can draw on the full at the barrels! (my opinion) For all those who wanted an OA who has more the sulphurous notes of the UAs .... please be there very much

Rather a textbook example of a modern sherry whisky, the Glenrothes Whisky Maker's Cut is a little fragile at times but offers some complexity and richness as well.
Quite sulphuric, which doesn't please me.
Golden. Nose: Dish, vanilla, sherry, fruit. Taste: Dish, vanilla, fruit, chocolate. Vault
The Glenrothes Whisky Maker's Cut is a NAS release (no age statement) matured in first-fill sherry seasoned oak only. That is interesting. It may be the first time I see on a bottle label explicitly the industry's ubiquitous practice of seasoning casks with sherry (read the comments) and calling them "sherry casks" since true sherry casks are essentially extinct. The distillery's website also mentions this practice, albeit without much detail. After maturing for an undisclosed period, the whisky is bottled with no added color and at a strength chosen by Glenrothes Master Whisky Maker Gordon Motion: 48.8%. He chose that strength because he feels it is a better ABV than the standards (40%, 43%, 46%) for sherry-aged malts specifically. Hence: Whisky Maker's Cut. The whisky itself is so dark in color (of course!) it's almost umber. Internet rumors that should not be taken as fact suggest that this first release is about 16 years old, but future batches may vary. The color is dark amber
Tasted at the Utrecht Whisky Tasting Festival 2023, from a tasting glass. It needs time in the glass to open up, which improves it as a whole, but it needs a step up would I be willing to buy a bottle.

Overall, I found this to be a truly interesting whisky. I think it needs to be aerated for quite a while after the first glass, because it changes and develops over time. There are differences and improvements between the first and last sips, even if not significant. While the initial spicy intensity hasn't completely disappeared, a bitter coffee-like intensity has been added, and the spice has calmed down. Although it's a bit strong at first, after a relatively long aeration and adding a few drops of water, it becomes even more enjoyable and interesting. It's not a whisky that's easily deciphered; I can say it's complex and challenging, and it can surprise and delight you even before the glass is completely empty.

| Нос | 84 | The first scent that hit my nose as soon as I opened the cork was dark chocolate. It's very full-bodied, aromatic, and dark, with sweet and spicy aromas. I detect quite intense aromas of dark grape molasses and dark caramel. When I gently swirl the glass, a strong and intensely spicy oak barrel and black pepper scent emerges. After the glass sits for a while, when I smell it again, I detect aromas that I would describe as dark caramel and citrus peel sticks dipped in dark chocolate, accompanied by a slightly pungent spice reminiscent of black pepper and oak bitterness. I added 3 drops of water; the scents of raisins, burnt caramel, a very slight hint of dried apple, and a distinct grape seed scent also became apparent. |
| Вкус | 84 | It has a strong, intense, spicy, and quite full-bodied structure; it coats the palate, but I wouldn't say it leaves a particularly greasy feeling. Again, I clearly tasted dark chocolate at first, which quickly transformed into an intense note of black pepper and slightly acidic citrus peels, or rather, grapefruit peel. In the background, I sense a slightly metallic taste, like copper distillation stills; it was unexpected, but it doesn't bother me. I can detect a bit of red fruit syrup, cherry, slightly burnt caramel, and a little diluted molasses. I should also add the coffee sensation that started to become dominant in the last few sips. |
| Финиш | 85 | The first notes I detected were caramel, light coffee, and a strong spiciness like black pepper, ginger, and a hint of oak spice, followed by a sherry sensation: red fruit syrup, raisins, grape seeds, grape skins, and a slightly metallic feel. I felt a taste reminiscent of lightly toasted bread in the retronasal. In the last sips, a distinct coffee sensation started to emerge; it wasn't there in the first few sips, or perhaps I didn't perceive it that way. It started to appear as the glass was almost empty. While it doesn't linger from the beginning to the end, I continue to get a stronger coffee sensation a while after swallowing. I would say it has a long finish. |
Krass! about 67 € and NAS - what should you expect big? To make it short: MUCH! Certainly by far the best NAS whisky I've ever tried. Despite 48% vol. The alcohol is almost creamy soft integrated. No trace of youth - it looks more like a set older whisky> 18 years. Lots of vanilla, with already noticeable oak and a perfectly integrated sherry barrel influence. Everything rather in the dark direction with complexity, which brings only the age with the time. The typical Glenrothes earthiness comes from time to time to the fore. Very good price / performance ratio. You can buy it without hesitation and have a lot of fun with it. I know some whiskys> 18 years, which I would leave without problems on the shelf. Again, something learned: When NAS is done with brain and mind conscientious, it can also get really good stuff around. I remember the old Royal Lochnagar Selected Reserves. Unfortunately, it's not easy anymore and cheap to get. Rightly!
Deep sweet sherry, cakes, vanilla, mellow, green fruits, nutmeg. Taste echoes nose with buttery bold.

Glenrothes Whisky Maker's Cut. Bottling from a couple of years ago. Very orange. At this stage I am thinking "another cheap NAS with sherry seasoned casks and probably full of caramel. SIGH." Aroma is waxy, faint hair spray, marmalade, polished leather, waxed orange peel, green raisin later on. Body is fairly watery up front becoming oilier in the mid-palate. Taste is quite good actually - surprising as the aroma wasn't promising fireworks - some genuine European oak sherry cask vibes and a deep spiciness, impressions of syrup without the corresponding sweetness, rich deep treacle notes with burnt wood. Complex enough to keep you interested sip to sip. At the price this is a very, very solid whisky. No bad casks in this bottling. Punchy flavour. Good, and kept growing on me. Very good in fact. I was a little cynical approaching this one but it won me over more and more until eventually I ended up on a whisky website buying a bottle. At the price it would be silly not to really - only £45 for 70cl and if I tasted this blind I'd have guessed over £100. I have had similar but inferior whiskies costing ten or more times as much. 3.8/90

The craft presentation suits Glenrothes well; I wish we could also get some transparency with the age indication. It's a decent sherry-forward whisky, but a little more refined than other sherry bombs. I hope we see Glenrothes like this more often. Price-performance ratio: Good, Medium-low (between the two ends of the price scale) Would I repurchase?: Trying it was enough; if Glenrothes Craft applies this presentation to their entire core range, I'd be happy to try the others as well.

| Нос | 84 | Here, a biscuity flavor interestingly blends with an olive-like brinny. Fig jam, dried red plums and figs, a touch of brown sugar; a rich, aromatic sugar with plenty of molasses; muscovado. Lotus cookies. A bit of gingerbread candy. A lovely nose with plenty of Oloroso. Walnut sausage. Grape molasses. A hint of vanilla. Roasted petit beurre biscuits in the background. A perfumed side. In the background, a bit of almond paste and plenty of cherries, the almond-like notes reminiscent of cherry pit aromas. A pleasant, smooth sherry-forward nose. |
| Вкус | 84 | Interestingly, it has a medium-low body. The sweetness is medium-high. Notes of walnuts, a hint of cashews and almonds. The Oloroso influence is very pronounced. That fortified rancio note is also somewhat noticeable; a hint of tobacco and a more pronounced hazelnut flavor. Like walnut sausage with grape molasses again. Orange peel. A hint of cinnamon and allspice with warm oak spices. Following the Oloroso, a slight influence of American oak emerges with vanilla and coconut cream. A balanced palate that adequately reflects the sherry character without being overly complex. |
| Финиш | 83 | A slightly above medium intensity, with a slightly longer finish than average. Plenty of brown sugar and orange peel. A bit of a coffee-like quality, like cold brew. The addition of whole black peppercorns, cinnamon, and allspice gives off an oak spice flavor. A slight caramel and that black olive-like note that sometimes appears as a flaw in stouts. Dried red raisins. High-quality cocoa powder. Like a chocolate cake with orange peel. A little shallower than the rest, but still decent. |

[November, 2019] Ooops, I did it again and bought a bottle of sherried whisky without trying it before but because Jim scored it 95 points (and he is very sensitive to sulphur) chances are good this is clean stuff... ...and it is. This alone is a great achievement in itself (for Glenrothes that often released sulphur-spoiled casks in the past) and I guess sherry whisky lovers will like this very much. It is good to get an impression how paxarette-improved drams tasted in the past (for reasonable bucks) despite I doubt they used paxarette on these casks. To me this dram is a little too simplistic and designed (or in other words: too immature), but this is just my personal taste...
нос · вкус · финиш
| Нос | 86 | The colour is chestnutoloroso sherry and the nose offers a clean sherry profile that reminds me a little of old paxarette-improved drams. This is dry oloroso at its best with all its sweet fruity and sour winey aromas in an appropriate wooden setting. It is pretty fine but a little simple, to be honest. The malt adds almost nothing to the nose, too bad. After significant breathing time the wood grows stronger while the sherry retreats somewhat, I like the initial nose better. |
| Вкус | 87 | The taste is flawless and of a delicious oloroso sherry profile with some barley sugary impressions, at least. The wood is stronger than in the nose but there are mostly spices and less tannins, hence it is enjoyable this way. Again, this profile is rather simple but easy quaffable if you like full-throttle-sherried drams. |
| Финиш | 85 | The dram arrives a little hot on the palate with a warming and peppery mouthfeel and a minor coating effect, only. The finish is rather short and adds some milk chocolatey impressions that are tasty. No bitter-drying moments here what indicates rather short maturation times (hence NAS). Water strenghtens the sherry aromas again both in the nose and on the palate - I like this dram best when reduced to about 43% abv. |

Nose: The first whiff is not really pleasant, it is rather flat. A blurred cloud of "well, it's a whisky" flows upwards. After my impressive nose has adjusted itself to it, it diverges: Light fruit (more apples than peaches), Feuerzangenbowle, cinnamon and sugar. It prickles in my nose. Suddenly, it smells intensely of a middle-aged woman, that is, of a perfume that'd like to smell like violets, but unfortunately fails to do so, and of cheap soap. Ewww. Taste: Compared to the nose, the taste is almost tame. The dram is relatively mild on the tongue and basically tastes like milk chocolate with schnapps. Not very interesting. Finish: Wine from a Tetra Pak, cheap milk chocolate and blackberries. At least it won't let me suffer too long - this is a delightfully short finish.

It's not a bad whisky, but I probably wouldn't like to drink it again. There are several better choices on the market for this price.

Tasted at WhiskyLive Thailand 2020. Quite like it.
1449) The Glenrothes, Whisky Maker's Cut, The Soleo Collection Challenging as always to do a tasting while at work, but still irresistible when a friend brought forward this fiery red beauty for a tipple at about midnight . N- Wisp of brown sugar come fore, then cocoa and danish pastry derived from the Sherry are obvious with dark fruit whirling on. Sweetness well capped by the strength. Quite direct, and may not well layer and evolving as to compared to the excellent 18YO, but unfair to judge it that way as both has different spectrum all together. (87/21) P- A modern sherry type, the strength stands out with soothness. Warm ginger, brownie with touch of tartness. Expecting more boldness to develop from the FF casks but didn't happen even after breathing time. (86/20) F- Medium long and quite sensational here. Waxy dried fruit with superb bitterness that hanging on well at the tail. Warming, gingery, red berries with firm dryness, ended fairy clean. (89/22) B/B- 86/20 Sensible to bottled this at higher strength, but missing the boldness on nose and palate. Weighted Rate- 83pt — at The Whisky Bar, Kuala Lumpur.

I was pleasantly surprised by this whisky. It is very sherry-heavy and very pleasant to drink. The alcohol is super integrated. It's fun and for 50 -60 euros. Clear purchase recommendation.

Good fruity whisky that is pleasantly sweet and spicy. Orange peel and sulphurized raisins accompany you throughout, spices are added to the taste and finish. Doesn't get boring over time either, changes in the large bottle make it even rounder.
Barrel-strength whisky matured in sherry casks.

5cl sample first tasting: Raisins, dried fruit, caramel, a nutty, dry sherry style. The alcohol content is well-balanced, providing a pleasantly robust attack. Here, too, the nutty, dry sherry style predominates, although complexity and age are unfortunately lacking. Dried fruit add to the aftertaste. The whisky seems a bit young after the initial palate, which somewhat detracts from the overall impression. Overall, it falls just short of a "very good" rating and remains a pretty good whisky. Edit: The second time I tried it, I like it a bit better, 87 points, an average of 86.5, so rounded up to 87.
Somehow it seems a bit clumsy for me, simple and with little depth. If it's a Glenrothes with sherry, then I'd rather resort to a UA bottling with age for a little more money.
Room temperature when drinking: 17 ℃ Viewing Eyes: Golden Brown Smell Nose: syrup, fallen leaves, earth, ruined wooden house, dust, spider web, soft rotten peach, white rice, coconut toast, dried fruit, baked oak, a little yeast dough Taste Palate: orange syrup, refreshing orange peel, grass, white flowers, ginger, lemongrass, mountain pepper, a little milky fig. Finish: Finish, short, hard candy, grapefruit peel, orange peel, Body: light, loose, less oily, obvious bitterness, less tannin Nose: 83/100 Palate: 83/100 Finish: 80/100 Body: 80/100 Overall: 81.5 / 100 Overall: Very puzzled. The initial filling of the Shirley barrels plus 48.8% alcohol level makes it difficult to feel the impact of Shirley barrels at the entrance and the entrance. Is it because of NAS?
Priceworthy piece.

| Нос | 90 | Cooked and dark fruits with orange peel wrapped around it. A nice balanced sweetness with a mix of blueberries, vanilla and oak. This nose is amazing. |
| Вкус | 87 | Vanilla and oak on the palate, very mild and kind without any intense alcoholkick. Sherried raisins after a few seconds. |
| Финиш | 86 | Medium short finish with vanilla and oak. Wish it was longer! |

I like this whisky! It's not a drop bursting with complexity, but it's still very enjoyable and exciting.

| Нос | 84 | Vanilla, finest sherry, fine fruit notes and a pleasant acidity. |
| Вкус | 84 | Fruity start, surrounded by vanilla and a tingle. It then flows into a pleasant spiciness, the description on the packaging is surprisingly precise. Simple, direct, clear, and yet very beguiling. |
| Финиш | 82 | Quite simple, sweetness disappears almost completely after a short time. Unfortunately not the strength of this whisky |
After watching Whisky-Jason's video, my interest was piqued. So far I've only known the old Standard 12 (not so great) and a whisky.de club fake bottling from Signatory-Vintage (not outstanding either). Let's see if this one can convince me. The key data are to be described as OK. Strong drinking strength, uncolored and unfiltered. I am excited.

| Нос | 86 | There is not much wood, which was hardly to be expected from a NAS. But already very sweet aromas, including raisins (yes, with minimal, nice sulphur). The alcohol doesn't bite or sting at all. Nice. |
| Вкус | 86 | Sweet and powerful with a good dose of oak spice. The raisins are also felt here. Also some wood. Round and a little sparkling. |
| Финиш | 85 | Rather short. It's getting drier. A pleasant spiciness remains. Around. Conclusion: sherry whisky that leaves room for the distillery. Good balanced cask choice. Of course it lacks a bit of age, but that's not so bad. He's worth his money. |
Class sherry malt with a little spice and a subtle note of nuts.
